"Drink plenty of water and find a cool place.

That was the advice offered Monday afternoon by the Jefferson County Office of Fire and Emergency Management in a heat and humidity alert.

“This week the area will be experiencing extremely high temperatures and extremely high humidity,” wrote Joseph D. Plummer, director. He cautioned that heat-related illness “is particularly dangerous to infants, young children and people over 65.”

If not treated promptly, illness caused by heat can be fatal, he said. He extended the advisory for pet care as well.

People should drink plenty of water, even if they don’t feel thirsty, he said. If there is no air conditioning in the home, residents should visit public buildings that are air conditioned.

“If dehydration or a heat-related illness is suspected, call 911 immediately and get the person to a cooler location,” Mr. Plummer said.

He also passed on an advisory from National Grid that higher electric usage is anticipated during the heat spell. Mechanical failures may result, so the public is asked to conserve energy where possible.

The county is not scheduling any cooling shelters, he said.
