In 1986, Gilbert and Maria Ashley purchased their St. Lawrence River property and began the tedious task of cleaning the trees and overgrowth. After retiring from teaching and coaching in Long Island, the Ashley's made the permanent move to the river property in 1991.
They have been working since the original purchase to develop their numerous garden spaces, with the help of longtime friend Wayne Chesbrough. The plants extend from the Rt. 37 side of the home to the terraced gardens on numerous annual plants placed in the gardens are started from seed. Mr. Ashley said the plant beds include numerous perennials, bulbs, annuals, shrubs and a banana tree that winters indoors. The Ashley Gardens will be part of the Ogdensburg Garden Club “Summer Garden Tour 2012.” The Ogdensburg Garden Club annual fundraiser will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 11. To purchase tickets, see a Garden Club member or call Dianne Webster at 393-5467 or Debbie Bruyere 394-9502. (Submitted photo)
