The 2012 Jefferson County Fair hosted its annual Band Day on Tuesday, with six schools competing for one thing: to be the top band in the north country.

The Gouverneur Central School Wildcat Marching Band lived up to its name by exciting the crowd at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds with balloons in school colors and a wildcat mascot. The band, which has nearly 100 members, took home first place for its well-synchronized program.

“They start out with 100 points, and it goes down from there,” said contest announcer and Jefferson County Fair Association Secretary George A. Turner. “Gouverneur got 90 out of 100 points, so they did good.”

Event classes are broken down by school size and student population. “Most of (the bands) travel around all summer,” Mr. Turner said.

The afternoon results:

■ Class A: Gouverneur, 90 points, first place.

■ Class B: Heuvelton Central School, 82, first place; Lisbon Central School, 81, second place; General Brown Central School, 71, third place.
