Alice I. Matthews, 86, Clayton Center Rd., Clayton, passed away Friday evening, July 6, 2012, at her home under the care of her loving family.

The funeral service will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton, on Tuesday, July 10, at 11AM with Rev. Thomas Augliano, River Community Church, officiating with burial following in Depauville Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Auburn on September 10, 1925, daughter of Rudolph and Anna Jackson Prochnow. She was a 1942 graduate from East High School in Auburn.

In December 1942 she married Maxwell Dano and he was killed in action in Italy in 1945. She then married Edwin Merritt Matthews, a dairy farmer, on August 15, 1947 at the Old Stone Church parsonage in Depauville. Mr. Matthews died on October 8, 1968.

She held various jobs in the Clayton area including several restaurants and also had worked in the cafeteria for the Thousand Islands school system. She enjoyed volunteering, especially for the Jefferson County Volunteer Center in Watertown. Alice also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and especially raising her children and their families.

Mrs. Matthews is survived by her nine children, Buddy Dano and wife, Judy, IL, Fred Matthews and wife, Dawn, LaFargeville, Lillian Green, Clayton, Daniel Matthews and wife, Faye, Felts Mills, Hal Matthews and wife, Sindy, Clayton, David Matthews, Salem, VA, Samuel Matthews and wife, Deborah, Clayton, Raymond Matthews, Clayton, and Barbara McAloon and husband, George, LaFargeville; 23 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her two husbands, she was predeceased by her grandson, Steven Dano, her brother, Leon Jackson, and her sister, Lillian Payne.
