Wizards rally in 8th to down Hawkeyes, 8-5

COOPERSTOWN — The Watertown Wizards rallied with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to steal a Perfect Game Collegiate League victory over the Cooperstown Hawkeyes, 8-5, at Doubleday Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Watertown (10-15) bounced back from a 6-4 loss to the Elmira Pioneers on Tuesday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds with its own late-inning heroics. The Wizards are 8-3 on the road this season.

Donald Walter generated three hits, including a game-tying RBI triple in the eighth against the Hawkeyes (9-15). Derek Hagy drove in Walter with a single to provide the winning run. Brandon Cipolla belted a two-run home run later in the inning.

Reliever Drew Quinney pitched two innings for the win. Jonathan Perez pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Bradley Vanderglas tallied three hits for Cooperstown. Hayden Elrod took the loss.

In Tuesday’s game, Kendall Konopka drove in the winning run with a single for Elmira.

Tyler McIntyre clubbed his a three-run homer in the sixth. Miles Canady pitched the eighth for the win and Craig Pearcy got the save.

Rene Solis pitched six strong innings for the Wizards. The start of the game was delayed 40 minutes due to rain.

Kole Mickolio took the loss for Watertown, which had only four hits totals. Watertown is 2-12 at home this season and have lost nine in a row at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

The Wizards are off today before they travel to Newark for a doubleheader Friday starting at 5:05 p.m.
