North country Republicans will go to the polls from noon to 9 p.m. today to pick their candidates for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.
The Senate candidates are Wendy Long, a Manhattan attorney; George Maragos, the Nassau County comptroller; and Rep. Bob Turner, R-New York City. They each hope to take on U.S. Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in November.
The House candidates are Matthew A. Doheny, a financial portfolio manager of Watertown, and Kellie A. Greene, a recent seminary school graduate of Sackets Harbor. They each look to take on Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, in November.
New York has a closed primary, meaning only members of a party may vote in its elections. This year, only Republicans are on the ballot for the U.S. Senate and the areas House district.
Polling locations in Lewis and St. Lawrence counties have been consolidated. The polls in Jefferson County are the same as they were for the April 24 GOP presidential primary. A listing of polling locations can be found at the Watertown Daily Times politics blog, The Public Interest, at http://goo.gl/4SkR1.
