TUPPER LAKE The annual Tupper Lake Rotary Club All-Star Football game, scheduled for July 12, was canceled Wednesday because the team from Section 7 did not have enough players.
The event has gone on for the last eight summers and features an East team of Section 7 seniors against a West team of Section 10 seniors. Each team requires at least 20 athletes and Section 7 had only nine.
No decision has been made about the continuation of the game in future years.
I hope (it continues), said Massena coach Anthony Diagostino, who has coached the West team in past years. But even when I was coaching the numbers were low. Its just tough. They are away from the sport and looking on to the next step of their life, whether it be college, military or working.
Diagostino sees the value in the annual event.
I think its a great opportunity for the kids to play one more time and not so much against each other but with each other, he said. Its really great watching the kids from Ogdensburg, Massena, Canton and Potsdam, who kind of grew up not really hating each other, but with that interleague rivalry, how they can come together during a few practices and turn into a team.
