CANTON — The village Board of Trustees appointed retired state police 1st sergeant Victor N. Rycroft temporary chief at a special meeting today.

Mr. Rycroft, Morley, will be paid $18,000 for three months.

His appointment, which starts June 28, gives the village breathing room in which to select a provisional chief.

The board had appointed Basil W. Cheney to the post but he resigned Monday after a month on the job when he discovered the $75,000 annual salary was less than he was paid as a sergeant in the department when overtime was included.
