Nick Vaugh, a former Ogdensburg city councilman who butted heads with the Republican establishment in a heated 2011 election, got a job as the political affairs specialist for the Oneida Indian Nation.

Among other responsibilities, Mr. Vaugh will keep tabs on legislation that's of interest to the Oneidas, who run the Turning Stone casino in Verona.

Mr. Vaugh did not run for re-election in 2011; he won in 2007 as a 20-year-old sophomore at Clarkson University.

In 2011, he angered some of his fellow Republicans in the river city by violating Reagan's 11th Commandment: He recorded a robocall assailing the mayor, Bill Nelson, when Mr. Nelson was (pause for cliche) in a fight for his political life. Mr. Nelson ended up winning that race.

Mr. Vaugh was a frequent customer on Cape Air's Ogdensburg to Albany flights; his girlfriend works for a lobbying shop in the state capital.
