Doheny blasts health care ruling, Owens

A January ruling from President Obama's administration is fueling a political debate that sits at the nexus of health care, religion and birth control.
The decision requires insurance plans at Catholic institutions — colleges are one example — to provide contraceptives to employees. Catholic groups, including the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg, have religious objections to contraception.
Republican Matt Doheny and his potential November opponent for the north country's congressional seat, Democratic Rep. Bill Owens, are both Catholic.
Mr. Owens was interviewed by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise's Chris Morris on the matter, and didn't call for any sort of change to the law.
Mr. Doheny, on the other hand, is none too pleased with the decision.
“As an American and a practicing Catholic, I am alarmed by the Obama administration’s recent decision to require all employers to provide contraception, morning-after pills and sterilization services in their health plans," he said.
Mr. Doheny also took a swipe at Mr. Owens's lack of outrage on the matter.
“Owens is a Catholic, but he’s put his loyalty to ObamaCare first by defending the ruling," Mr. Doheny said.
The New York Times reported today that a senior adviser to Mr. Obama signaled that there could be compromise on the matter.
