David Renzi will continue to serve on the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, a spokeswoman for Assembly Minority Brian Kolb told me.
Mr. Kolb appointed Mr. Renzi to the new ethics watchdog, which will oversee the executive and legislative branches. His appointment raised the ire of some good-government groups, who felt that it was inappropriate for a commissioner's wife to work for a state senator (Jessica Renzi works for state Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton). Mrs. Ritchie's office, Mr. Kolb's office, the mayor of Watertown and one good-government group said they didn't see the big deal.
Mr. Renzi, who has not responded to calls today and yesterday, said on Wednesday that he was unsure if he would continue to serve because of Mrs. Renzi's employment with one of the branches of government that her husband is going to oversee. But according to Mr. Kolb, Mr. Renzi will continue to serve as one of 14 members.
Other JCOPE members have come under criticism, and none have had their offers withdrawn or done so themselves.
