Craig Fox reports:
The Watertown City Council has started looking to fill the vacant part-time city judge position.
Council members set a deadline of Dec. 15 for candidates to submit a letter of interest and resume to fill the vacancy caused by last week’s election of Republican Eugene R. Renzi, who won a 10-year term as the full-time city judge. Interested candidates should submit that information to the mayor‘s office at City Hall, 245 Washington St., Room 302A.
They must live in the city of Watertown and must be an attorney. Paid an annual salary of $27,200, the part-time judge works about one day a week in city court and fills in for the full-time magistrate when the judge cannot preside over court.
City Attorney Robert J. Slye advised council members to publicize they were looking for candidates to drum up interest.
They should also make sure that attorneys know that council members haven’t already made up their mind on selecting someone, he said, noting that he knows of one person who is already interested. He did not identify the person.
“The word is out there” that City Council is soliciting interest, Mayor Jeffrey E. Graham said.
Council members plan to put the information on the city’s website and send a letter to the local Bar Association.
