Former Clarkson University men’s hockey assistant coaches Ron Rolston and Casey Jones were in Potsdam for interviews this week and no other candidates for the head coaching position are expected to visit.
Rolston was interviewed on Sunday and flew back to Michigan, where he coaches the U.S. Under-18 team. Jones, the associate head coach at Cornell University, was in Potsdam on Tuesday for an interview.
A decision could come by the end of the week, though Clarkson has an athletic department golf outing scheduled for Verona.
Both men were assistant coaches for Mark Morris, who was also one of the applicants for the position.
Rolston worked at Clarkson from 1996-99 and also has been an assistant at Lake Superior State, Harvard and Boston College.
Jones, who worked at Clarkson from 1993-95, spent 13 years as an assistant at Ohio State before returning three seasons ago to his alma mater, Cornell.
Early in the process Clarkson offered the job to then-Union coach Nate Leaman, but he was already negotiating with Providence College, where he wound up. Clarkson also offered the position to Potsdam native Craig Conroy, who recently retired from the Calgary Flames and now works with the team’s front office.
Others who have been reported to have been candidates include Lake Superior State head coach Jim Roque, former Golden Knight and current Merrimack assistant Phil Roy, Brasher Falls native and Denver assistant Derek Lalonde, Canton native and Hobart coach Mark Taylor, former Clarkson player and assistant Jean-Francois Houle, U.S. Hockey Executive Bob Mancini and former Lake Superior State coach Frank Anzalone.
There is a possibility that Clarkson could have to go through this process all over again on the women’s side as co-coaches Matt and Shannon Desrosiers have interviewed for the vacant Ohio State head coaching position.
