Since Clarkson just played Harvard last Friday I will not post a preview, since little has changed and that outlook is available to view.
Instead there will be a look at how the ECAC Hockey playoffs have gone in the first 8 years of the new format where all 12 teams qualify.
First Round
Most of the time you can count on 2 upsets in this round. Only twice, in 2007 ans 2008, have all the home teams won their series. Five times in 8 years have seen 2 upsets.
Here is how each matchup has broken down:
8 vs. 9 (8 is 5-3)
7 vs. 10 (7 is 5-3)
6 vs. 11 (tied, 4-4 *good news for SLU?*)
5 vs. 12 (5 is 7-1)
Quarterfinals
If your favorite team is seeded 6 or below than I wouldn't make reservations in Atlantic City. Seeds 6-12 are 4-21 in quarterfinal series.
First, here is how the four teams with first-round byes have done:
1 - 6-2
2 - 7-1
3 - 7-1
4 - 4-4
(as you can see, a team may be better off traveling to face the regular-season champion than the second or third-place team)
Here is how the other seeds have done:
5 - 4-3
6 - 1-3
7 - 0-5
8 - 1-4
9 - 1-2
10 - 0-3
11 - 1-3
12 - 0-1
Semifinals
So you've survived one, or maybe two series, and are one of the first four teams to make it to Atlantic City. What to expect?
Here are the records of various seeds in semifinal games:
1 - 3-3
2 - 5-2
3 - 3-4
4 - 1-3
5 - 1-3
6 - 1-0
8 - 0-1
9 - 1-0
11 - 0-1
Championship Game
And, finally, how teams have done in the title game:
1 - 3-0
2 - 3-3
3 - 0-3
4 - 1-0
5 - 0-1
6 - 1-0
9 - 0-1
