I'm ammending my numbers.

I earlier reported that 98.6 percent of absentees were counted. But it nagged me that Oneida County's absentee ballot results were far higher than the number of absentees that they reported receiving last week.

I called Oneida County's elections board, but they said they couldn't break down a candidate's total votes into machine votes and absentee votes. This was a problem for me, because my machine totals for Oneida County were based on their Web site, which still shows incomplete results.

I believe I found what I was looking for, however, in the state Board of Elections' accounting of the 23rd Congressional District race. (h/t Post Standard).

I knew Oneida County's final results. I now knew their machine total. When I ammended their machine tallies, it showed 240 absentees counted - far closer to the 209 they had quoted me on the day before they started counting. (My previous number was 762, which I now acknowledge was wrong.)

So here are the new numbers:

  • There are 628 absentee ballots remaining to be counted, or 91.5 percent have been counted
  • Rep. Bill Owens leads by 3,397 votes, of which 2,864 came from the ballot boxes and 533 votes came from absentees.
  • These numbers, for various reasons, aren't exactly perfect. But they are as close to perfect as I can get them. The number I have the most confidence in is the bottom line of this snapshot in time: Owens leading by 3,397 votes.

Note: Jefferson and Clinton counties' numbers are incomplete. I've grabbed 93 percent of Jefferson's absentees. Clinton has reported 79.3 percent of absentees.

A couple of notes:

  • St. Lawrence County has updated their machine totals after a recanvassing, which I've included below.
  • Franklin County couldn't provide me with a breakout of machine vote versus absentees. The elections official I talked to there said during the recanvass, they found that a couple of inspectors had accidentally attributed more votes to Mr. Hoffman than he actually received. His election night total was 4,589. His total now, including absentees, is 4,564. Since they can't provide me with the new machine total, I can't tell you how many of those 4,564 votes were cast via absentee - which affects the percent left.
  • Clinton County officials said they wouldn't be done until tomorrow morning.
