Nov. 5, 1999:About 150 residents of Carthage and West Carthage met to discuss the findings of the villages' consolidation study. The study is considered a resource the residents and village officials can use to cooperate and share some village services.

Nov. 5, 1984:The Watertown Correctional Facility has become the first prison in the state to require every inmate to be enrolled in an educational program. The 512-inmate facility offers one of the largest curriculums of any of the prisons: 10 academic and 15 vocational courses.

50 years ago

Nov. 5, 1959:Chevrolet's Massena branch is tied closely to the development of the new General Motors car, the Corvair, with the north foundry turning out a dozen different aluminum parts for the revolutionary new Corvair engine. To date, more than 50,000 Corvair automobiles with their six-cylinder, air-cooled engines have been distributed by Chevrolet to some 7,500 dealers.

Nov. 5, 1934:Less censorship of undergraduate publications is being sought by St. Lawrence University students, Canton, and a petition requesting greater editorial freedom will be sent to the administration officials as a result of a motion passed by the student body of the Thelomathesian Society.

Nov. 5, 1909:When the board of supervisors of Jefferson County convenes as a board of county canvassers, the members will have several problems to unravel, and it is possible that some of the contests will get into the courts before they are decided. Tie votes appear, and rejected ballots must be examined.

Nov. 5, 1884:There was a drizzling rain throughout the northern and western states yesterday. Nature, quite aware of what was going on among the voters, shed oceans of tears. In the evening, when the returns were coming in, the elements set up a regular boohoo.
