Anne M. Lowery, 98, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Carthage, where she had resided since Oct. 19th. The past four years she has resided at Kevin and Linda Thomas' Boarding Home in Great Bend.

Born January 15, 1911, in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Elmer and Nellie Smith More, she graduated from Ogdensburg High School. She received her teaching certificate form Potsdam Normal.

Anne taught in one room school houses in Hammond and Brier Hill.

She married Mahlon Lowery on June 30, 1937, at the More home in Brier Hill, by Rev. Henry Shoemaker.

In 1938, the couple purchased a farm on LeRay St., in Watertown, where they sold milk and butter. In 1944 they purchased the Pohl Farm in Rutland Hollow which they owned and operated until 1957. The couple continued to live on the farm. In 1964 Anne returned to teaching at the Black River Elementary School, where she taught the 3rd grade, up until she retired in 1984. Mr. Lowery died in 1986.

Anne was a member of the Rutland United Church of Christ, Black River Fiddlers, and retired teacher's association. She sat on the election board in the Town of Rutland for several years. She enjoyed canning her produce and square dancing.

Among her survivors are three daughters and a son-in-law, Beverly A. Hinshaw, Fulton, Nancy L. and Wayne H. Staplin, Rutland Center, and Marsha E. Nevills, Tennessee; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Mary S. Lowery, Rodman; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Ruth Smith, died before her.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1st at Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. A calling hour will be precede the service from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery in the Town of Rutland.

Donations may be made to the Town of Rutland Volunteer Fire Department or to the Town of Rutland Church of Christ.
