Oct. 29, 1999:The village of Lowville is so anxious to raze what remains of four fire-damaged State Street buildings that the Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting this weekend to award a demolition contract. Mayor Dan L. Salmon said the village will skip the bidding process and give the contract to one of two demolition companies. He estimated the contract will be worth $75,000 to $125,000.

Oct. 29, 1984:The two real estate developers interested in building a hotel complex in downtown Watertown are established firms with track records. That is about all that is certain about those proposing the project for the Hotel Woodruff site.

50 years ago

Oct. 29, 1959:The St. Joseph Lead Co. and United Steelworkers Local 3701 today ended the 121-day strike that had affected 300 workers at the company's Edwards and Balmat properties.

75 years ago

Oct. 29, 1934:Chances for bringing the Paterson, N.J., silk mill concern to Watertown have been enhanced by the proposition of the silk company to bear $10,000 of the $25,000 necessary to pay for the transportation and installation of machinery to the Watertown Silk Mill plant, North Hamilton Street, as well as for the repairing of the building.

100 years ago

Oct. 29, 1909:William Goula and Robert Philburn, about 19, are confined at the City Hall on suspicion of burglary of Frank Kimball's apartments in a flat at the corner of Grove and Moulton streets. The two men were captured Thursday, and a large amount of the goods recovered in a secluded cave on the banks of the Black River.

125 years ago

Oct. 29, 1884:A new private telegraph company known as the Air Line Co. has been organized in this city. There are as many as 20 stations on the line scattered about on both sides of the river.
