Spartans advance in soccer sectionals

ILION — Cassie St. Hilaire supplied a goal and an assist to lead the South Jefferson girls soccer team past Ilion, 2-0, in the Section 3 Class B first round game Tuesday.

Sam Slade added the insurance goal for South Jefferson (9-6-2), which will play at Lowville on Friday.

Ilion ended its season 11-6.

CINCINNATUS 2, LYME 1

Jill Hannah-Stark's penalty kick goal in the 30th minute was enough for Cincinnatus to end Lyme's season in the Section 3 Class D first round playoffs in Chaumont.

Cincinnatus also scored on a Lyme own goal in the third minute.

Misty Putnam scored for the Indians (11-5-1).

BOYS SOCCER

LOWVILLE 4, ILION 0

Keith Hardy supplied one goal and one assist in the first 28 minutes to help guide the No. 7 Red Raiders to the Section 3 Class B first round victory over the No. 10 Golden Bombers (9-8) at Lowville.

Taylor Ross, Nate Kelly and Hunter Berrus also scored. Regan Seydler and Bobby Swain provided assists, and Jeff Tabolt made five saves for Lowville (11-3-3).

PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 1,

COLTON-PIERREPONT 0

Blake Wilcox scored off an assist by Zach Votra in the 54th minute to lead No. 4 Parishville-Hopkinton (9-4-3) to a victory over No. 5 Colton-Pierrepont (11-6-1) in a Section 10 Class D quarterfinal game Tuesday at Potsdam.

CHATEAUGAY 1, CLIFTON-FINE 1 (OT)

The top-seeded Bulldogs (12-1-3) advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 3-2 win over the Eagles (7-9-2) on penalty kicks after the teams played to a tie at Potsdam High School.

HARRISVILLE 1, HEUVELTON 0

Jason Thomas scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute to send No. 2 Harrisville to the semifinals with a win over No. 7 Heuvelton (9-7-2) at SUNY Canton.

The Pirates (14-1-2) will play No. 3 Lisbon at 5 p.m. Friday at Potsdam High School.

LISBON 2, HAMMOND 0

Eric Mehaffy and Mike McDonell scored goals to lead Lisbon past No. 11 Hammond (3-15) at SUNY Canton.

The Golden Knights (13-2-2) did not give up a shot on goal.

GIRLS SWIMMING

INDIAN RIVER 97, ADIRONDACK 86

Rachel Rodriquez and Caitlin Whitmire each won a pair of individual events as the Warriors won a "B" Division meet in Philadelphia.

Rodriquez finished first in 100-yard butterfly and 500 freestyle events, while Whitmire won the 200 individual medley and the 100 free for Indian River (8-6).

Leeann Kiskiel and Emily Washburn each won two individual events for Adirondack (2-9-1).

CARTHAGE 92, LOWVILLE 83

Emily Sauter and Maggie Pogue each had a part in four wins as the Comets secured the "B" Division victory at Carthage.

Sauter won the 50 free and 100 backstroke, Pogue took the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and both swam on the fastest 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Ashley Peck won the 200 and 500 free and contributed to the 400 free relay for Carthage (12-2).

Ashley Panowicz captured the 100 free and swam on the victorious 200 free relay for the Red Raiders (8-5).

SOUTH JEFFERSON 91,

WEST CANADA VALLEY 78

Meagan Scott captured the 50 and 100 free and anchored the fastest 200 medley and 400 free relays to help boost the Spartans to the "C" Division victory at Adams.

Leah Conners added wins in the 200 and 500 free for South Jefferson (1-11).

BEAVER RIVER 54, SOUTH LEWIS 39

Jaccilyn Jantzi claimed the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and contributed to the fastest 200 medley and 400 free relays to help pace the Beavers (8-6-1) to the "C" Division triumph at Beaver Falls.

Stephanie Czajka took the 100 and 200 free for the Falcons (3-11).

WHITESBORO SWEEPS TRI-MEET

Amanda Burleigh captured the 50 and 100 freestyle to lead Whitesboro (13-1, 13-0) to "A" Division victories over Watertown, 105-80, and Holland Patent, 115-65, in a tri-meet at Holland Patent.

The Cyclones defeated the Golden Knights 109-72.

Samantha Favret won the 200 free and 100 backstroke for Watertown (11-3, 11-2).

Holland Patent is 7-6.
