Throughout the area
Winners announced:The winners of the inaugural Wabasso 5/10 K Run and Walk-A-Thon held at 4-H Camp Wabasso on May 17 are announced.
The event was sponsored by Snapple Beverages and WWNY TV-7-Fox 28. The Ronald McDonald House donated $5,000 to the camp scholarship fund.
Twenty-two people participated in the walk-a-thon, with half of their pledges going for their own camp expenses and the other half to the camp scholarship fund.
Kira Grega, Plessis, who raised $227, collected the most pledges and received a one-week campership.
Seventy-five runners participated in the Wabasso Run. The following runners won in their divisions:

Deployed:Navy SeamanAndrew J. Ashcraft,son of James R. Joseph, Adams, along with sailors and Marines from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, Norfolk, Va., and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, N. C., recently deployed as part of a regularly scheduled mission to support maritime security operations, provide crisis response capability and increase theater security cooperation and forward Navy presence in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas of operation. Mr. Ashcraft is a 2004 graduate of South Jefferson High School, Adams, and joined the Navy in November 2006.
Carthage
Receives scholarship offer: Thomas Michael McCarty,son of Henry A. and Anne M. McCarty, West Street, Carthage, has received an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps college scholarship offer to attend a selected host college or university. Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program, he would receive a bachelor's degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force. Mr. McCarty is a student at Carthage Central School.

Army Sgt.Kirk B. Winters,son of Suzanne Serrano, Lime Hollow Road, Norfolk, and Terry Winters, Vernon. He is a 1991 graduate of Norwood-Norfolk Central School, Norwood, and received a bachelor's degree in 1996 from St. Lawrence University, Canton.

Receives award: Amanda J. Crosley,daughter of Michael J. Crosley, South Colton, has received the George C. Marshall Award for 2009 during a ceremony at the Marshall Center, Virginia Institute, Lexington.
The award is presented annually to the most outstanding senior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets in military science studies and leadership values in each battalion at host universities or colleges. Top cadets from each cadet battalion represent the best of a highly selective organization. This is a national award and the highest award an ROTC cadet can receive. Mr. Crosley is a 2005 graduate of Colton-Pierrepont Central School, Colton.

Student to take job at JCC: Jamee Philips,Adams Center, a member of the class of 2009 at South Jefferson Central School, Adams, has accepted a job in the financial aid office at Jefferson Community College, Watertown, where she will major in math/science in the fall semester.
Miss Philips, daughter of James and Kimberly Philips, Adams Center, graduated with honors from South Jefferson, where she was a member of the Student Council for four years. She was an "ambassador" between her school and JCC, was a member of the National Honor Society and was voted queen of her senior prom.

Earn college credits:Several local graduating high school students began college early by taking classes through SUNY Canton.
The following, who accumulated three to 18 college credits each through the college's distance-learning partnership with St. Lawrence-Lewis County Board of Cooperative Educational Services, were honored at a recent recognition ceremony. Each received a SUNY Canton honor cord to be worn at their high-school graduations.

Receives scholarship: McKenzie F. Townsend,Sackets Harbor, a member of the class of 2009 at Sackets Harbor Central School, andStephen Hirst,Watertown, a member of the class of 2009 at Watertown High School, have received $500 North Central Zone New York State Retired Teachers Association Scholarships for Future Educators. Scholarship committee chairman John J. Gaffney presented the awards to Ms. Townsend and Mr. Hirst at the group's spring luncheon June 2.
Ms. Townsend, daughter of Gregg and Eileen Townsend, Sackets Harbor, plans to attend Elmira College and major in elementary special education.
Mr. Hirst, son of Matthew and Susan Hirst, Watertown, plans to attend SUNY Fredonia to major in secondary education music.

Completes nurse practitioner program: Marcella Ann Ablan Griffith,formerly of Carthage, graduated May 16 from the family nurse practitioner program at Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan.
A 1981 graduate of Carthage Central High School, she graduated from the licensed practical nursing program at Howard G. Sackett Technical Center in Glenfield in 1984 and received an associate's degree in nursing from Jefferson Community College, Watertown, in 1997. She was employed in adult day care at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, and also worked for Jefferson County Public Health before moving to Kansas in July 2002.
She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Fort Hays State University in 2006 and passed the national case management exam, receiving case manager certification.
She is employed by Irwin Army Community Hospital in Fort Riley, Kan., doing case management for injured soldiers, and plans to take the national certification exam for family nurse practitioners this year.
Dexter
Accepts teaching position: Hannah Lou Babel,daughter of Lewis and Cindy Babel, Dexter, has accepted a teaching position at Indian River Middle School, Philadelphia, and plans to pursue a master's degree in vocational-technical education from SUNY Oswego.
She graduated with a bachelor's degree in family and consumer science education and human ecology from SUNY Oneonta with all-college academic honors. She was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Phi Theta Kappa and National Residence Hall Honorary Honor Societies and served as a resident adviser and performing arts coordinator for the college union council.
Gouverneur
Receives doctorate: Marc A. Sestirreceived a doctorate in psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, at a hooding ceremony May 9. His dissertation was "You Are Who You Watch: Transportation, Identification and Activation of Media Character Traits."
Mr. Sestir, son of Frank and Valerie Sestir, Gouverneur, graduated in 1996 from Gouverneur Central School and received his bachelor's degree in 2000 from the University of Rochester. He is employed at Gettysburg (Pa.) College, teaching and continuing his research in psychology.
Norwood
Graduates from medical school: Angela L. Bosjoliereceived a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Pharmacy, Erie, Pa., May 31, at the Louis J. Tullio Arena in Erie.
She is the daughter of Ronald and Lorraine Bosjolie, Norwood, and the late Christina Fiacco Bosjolie. She is a 1994 graduate of Norwood-Norfolk Central High School and received a bachelor's degree in biology from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Bosjolie received a doctor of optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago, in 2002.
She will complete her one-year internal medicine internship at Long Island Jewish Hospital, New Hyde Park. Upon completion, she plans to enter the ophthalmology residency training program of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, Great Neck, in preparation for becoming an ocular surgeon.
Watertown
Student joins honors group: Ryan Joseph Harwood,Watertown, has become a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda national leadership and honors organization at Murray (Ky.) State University. Mr. Harwood, son of Barbara and Joseph Harwood, Watertown, also initiated into Epsilon Tau chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity Nov. 15.
