POTSDAM — Clarkson University has launched an online master of business administration degree program focusing on supply chain management.

The college has been working on the degree for two years. The program was developed so that working professionals can earn their MBA while staying on the job.

There couldn't be a better economic period to launch such a program, said Timothy F. Sugrue, dean of Clarkson's school of business.

"Companies are running leaner and leaner, so there are fewer people left behind, and those that are need to manifest skills that they might otherwise have not yet acquired. Their allowed time away from work is also not sufficient, certainly, to step away and expect to go back to your job," he said.

The MBA can be completed in two years, and consists of four 12-week course sessions per year. Two on-campus leadership development sessions are also required.

The flexible schedule allows students to work full-time and start applying the skills they learn immediately, Mr. Sugrue said.

"This is a big deal, because we've had it our way for a long time, making education convenient for us. Now we're making a big effort to make education more convenient for the people who need it the most," the dean said.

The degree combines several fields of study at Clarkson — the on-campus MBA and the popular supply chain management programs, as well as elements of the engineering and global operations management graduate program.

Clarkson's undergraduate supply chain management program has been ranked in the top 20 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report magazine since 2003. The supply chain program focuses on integrating strategic management, operations, organizational behavior, marketing and economics.

"The online supply chain MBA is the most exciting development within the school of business since the introduction of the supply chain program itself," Mr. Sugrue said.

The online MBA is fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. All of the courses are taught by Clarkson business school faculty.

Classes kick off in August, with the first on-campus leadership session. Applications are already being accepted. For more information, call the college at (866)-333-6613 or e-mail busgrad@clarkson.edu.
