ALEXANDRIA BAY — At an organizational meeting Monday night, the village Board of Trustees welcomed two new members, Steven E. Jarvis and Cindy M. Chaltain.
Mr. Jarvis and Mrs. Chaltain, both born and raised in the town of Alexandria, said they want to serve the community as best they can.
"It's my first time into politics and it's a learning experience for me," Mr. Jarvis said. "But I have a good board to work with. The rest, you learn as you go along," he said.
Mr. Jarvis is a sergeant with the state Department of Correctional Services who works at the Cape Vincent Correctional Facility. He served in the Navy for five years and came back to Alexandria Bay to raise a family.
He said he has been a member of the Alexandria Bay Volunteer Fire Department for the past 28 years and has been an emergency medical technician for the past 30 years.
If there are issues brought to the village regarding municipal parks, docks, buildings, playgrounds, Casino Island or the Water Department, Mr. Jarvis will research the topic and report his findings at board meetings.
Village trustees do not automatically join a committee that deals with the issues on which they concentrate, but they do act as liaison between committees and the village board. Mr. Jarvis also will act as liaison between the board and Village Court.
Mrs. Chaltain, a former trustee, said that she knows her job and is eager to start working on development projects in the village.
"I want to move the community in a positive direction," she said.
Mrs. Chaltain, who served the board for four years in the past, unsuccessfully ran for village mayor in 2007 against Terry J. Robb. A contract administrator at New York Air Brake Co., Watertown, she said she has been trying to stay up to date on village issues and that she is familiar with many of the duties handed to her.
She will handle issues with sewer and sanitation service, the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program and the riverwalk and serve as liaison for the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce and Alexandria Bay Community Improvement Association Inc.
