CORNWALL ISLAND, Ontario — Sarah C. Thompson, 89, of 236 Wishe Delormier Road, died Sunday evening at Cornwall Community Hospital, McConnell site, where she had been admitted earlier in the day.
Mrs. Thompson was a chambermaid in Syracuse for many years and was a professional basket-weaver.
Born June 9, 1919, on Cornwall Island, daughter of Abraham and Margaret Lahache Jocko, she married Joseph R. Thompson on Oct. 28, 1940, at St. Regis (Quebec) Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Jacobs officiating. Mr. Thompson died Jan. 24, 1997.
Mrs. Thompson was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting and canning pickles and loved to cook. She also enjoyed playing radio bingo.
She is survived by a son, Charles "G Bo" Thompson, Cornwall Island; three daughters and a son-in-law, Denise and Randy Jock, Snye, Quebec, Shirley Thompson, and her companion, Rudy Hart, Hogansburg, and Marie Cole, and her companion, Dennis Cole, Cornwall Island; a granddaughter, whom Mrs. Thompson raised, and her husband, Sandra and Ray Garrow, Hogansburg; 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Three daughters died before her, Julia Sawatis on Jan. 28, 1998, Irene A. McDonald on March 17, 2004, and Josephine M. White on Aug. 19. Two sons also died before her, Isai in infancy and Joseph Louis on March 17, 1963. Four sisters, Mary May Lazore, Hattie Mitchell, Annie Peters and Elizabeth Adams, and five brothers, Martin, Jake, Phillip, Louie and Tommy Jocko, also died before her.
A funeral Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Regis Catholic Church with the Rev. George H. Belgarde officiating. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis, Quebec.
Calling hours will be from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Friday at the home of her daughter Shirley Thompson, 1614 Route 37. Arrangements are with Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
