CANTON — Two former SUNY Canton students denied attacking and stabbing Mathew W. Rivera in October.

Darryl G. Tucker, 19, Manhattan, and Jevaughn J. Francis, 17, Bronx, each pleaded innocent Monday in St. Lawrence County Court to attempted murder and gang assault charges.

Both were charged in the Oct. 26 attack on Mr. Rivera, where he was reportedly stabbed several times while heading to the movies with a group of friends in the village. Mr. Rivera was released from Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, two days after the attack.

Mr. Tucker was charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and single counts of first- and second-degree gang assault and first- and second-degree assault.

Mr. Francis was charged with single counts of attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree gang assault and first- and second-degree assault. All the charges are felonies.

Both told County Judge Jerome J. Richards during their arraignments that they would test negative for drugs, but Mr. Tucker's drug test came back positive for marijuana. The judge warned Mr. Tucker to stay away from alcohol and drugs.

A third suspect, Roody J. Dorfeuille, 17, Bronx, was arraigned last month on two counts of attempted second-degree murder and single counts of first- and second-degree gang assault and first- and second-degree assault. All three have posted bail.
