BROWNVILLE — The Brownville Fire Department has its sole fire engine back after a five-month, $40,000 refurbishment.
The volunteer department sent its 1992 Grumman Fire/Spartan Class A pumper to Jerome Fire Equipment, Clay, for several patches and upgrades, including brake and pump repairs and new emergency lighting. The engine received aesthetic improvements, such as a new coat of paint and new lettering and striping, that make it more visible to motorists.
Chief Stephen L. Mott said the repairs and upgrades should extend the life of the engine to 30 years. He said the department decided it made more sense to improve the existing pumper rather than sell it and start over.
"There's no way with the economy the way it is that we could afford $250,000 to buy a new one," the chief said.
Mr. Mott said the department's fly car, rescue truck and two tankers are all less than 15 years old and still in good shape.
Brownville borrowed a reserve engine from Black River's fire department and continued uninterrupted service during the repair period. The department provides firefighting, rescue and emergency medical services to the village and town of Brownville and the town of Hounsfield, according to a press release. It also provides EMS to Lyme.
