CANTON — A 76-year-old man remained in critical condition Friday after being hit by a car Thursday morning while crossing West Main Street, hospital officials said.

George H. Ladison, 112 Howardville Road, was crossing the street about 7 a.m. Thursday when a 2008 Honda driven by Scott A. Murphy, 43, of 516 Mansion Ave., Ogdensburg, hit him, village police said. Mr. Ladison was in the pedestrian crosswalk when he was hit.

He was taken by helicopter to Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.

Mr. Murphy told police he didn't see Mr. Ladison because of the heavy rain and glare in the road.

He was charged with speeding and failure to yield to a pedestrian. He was issued appearance tickets for Canton Village Court.
