For the second time in two months, an Adams man was arrested Friday after he attempted to empty a bag of drugs while fleeing from officers, according to Watertown police.

This time, the man's wife and father also were arrested after arriving at the scene.

Jonathan M. Crandall, 34, of 7389 Charnick Drive, Adams, was charged at 7:29 p.m. on Coffeen Street with tampering with evidence, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of drug paraphernalia. He was ordered held in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building.

He had been pulled over for using a cell phone while driving, according to Sgt. Joseph R. Donoghue.

During the vehicle stop, Mr. Crandall's wife, 35-year-old Alyssa A. Crandall, arrived in a second vehicle and began asking officers how long the stop would take, Mr. Donoghue said.

Robert J. Reid Jr., 53, of 707 Water St., also arrived on the scene and began arguing with officers. Mr. Reid, who is reported to be Mr. Crandall's father, was told to leave the area.

At the same time, Mr. Crandall left his vehicle with a bag of white powder. As he ran up the street, he ripped the bag open and tried to empty it down a storm drain. He was apprehended and arrested, Mr. Donoghue said. The substances, alleged to be heroin and cocaine, later were recovered.

Mrs. Crandall was stopped in the 400 block of Vanduzee Street by state police. She was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and was released on $250 bail, police said. Mr. Reid was charged with second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, police said. He was released on an appearance ticket.

State police, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, the Metro-Jefferson Drug Task Force and the city Department of Public Works assisted at the scene.

On June 21, Mr. Crandall was arrested on County Route 159 in the town of Watertown and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, and unlawful possession of marijuana after an incident in which he also fled.

He was convicted of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance in 1996.
