OGDENSBURG — Marie J. Garno, 81, of 232 Washington St., died Tuesday at United Helpers Cedars Nursing Home.
Mrs. Garno was a bookkeeper for more than 20 years for Augsbury Corp. After retirement, she was a customer service representative for H&R Block. In the early 1960s, Mrs. and and her husband, Donald, operated Garno's Bakery on lower Ford Street before urban renewal.
Born June 1, 1927, in Ogdensburg, daughter of Arthur and Mary Trotter Swann, she graduated in 1945 from Ogdensburg Free Academy and attended Ogdensburg Business School.
She married Donald T. Garno on May 3, 1947, at St. John's Church. He died May 28, 2000.
Mrs. Garno was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Pastoral Care Group, Ogdensburg Senior Citizens and Red Hatters and, in her earlier years, a Girl Scout leader.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Francis Burdick and Heletha "Lee" and Fred Perrin, all of Ogdensburg; a son and his wife, Arthur and Tammy, Ogdensburg; a sister, Heletha I. Gilbert, Ogdensburg, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A requiem Eucharist will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church with her grandson, the Rev. Scott Garno, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Longbottom and her son, the Rev. Arthur Garno. Burial will follow in Foxwood Memorial Park.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Frary Funeral Home.
