BLACK RIVER — Merle R. Myers, 84, of 224 LeRay St., Apartment 209, died Monday afternoon at Carthage Area Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks.
Mr. Myers was employed as a truck driver for many years in the motor pool at Fort Drum. He retired in 1985 from the Wilna-Gormley Oil Co., Carthage, where he was employed for more than 23 years.
Born Sept. 13, 1923, in Theresa, son of Roy and Florence Meeds Myers, he graduated in 1942 from Copenhagen Central School. He married Beatrice M. Yousey Schmidt on Dec. 29, 1972, in Calcium. A previous marriage ended in divorce.
He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Myers was a member of Carthage Rod and Gun Club and was an outdoorsman.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Malcolm Campbell, Black River, and Vicky Forney, West Carthage; a son and his wife, Richard and Donna, Redwood; two stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Penny Messerich, Clifton Forge, Va., and Robin and James Redmond, Champion; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bethany Howard, West Carthage, and Muriel and Carl Arndt, Denmark; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A stepson, Carl Schmidt, a son-in-law, Michael Forney, and two brothers, Curtis and Donald, died before him.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Swinburne Cemetery, Deer River, with the Rev. Ronald Golden officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
