BLACK RIVER — Veronica T. Williams, 89, of 115 Howe St., died Saturday at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she had been a patient since Tuesday.
Mrs. Williams worked at the Barr Shoe Store in Auburn for 15 years following school. She later worked in the cafeteria at Black River Elementary School and then worked at Empsall's Department Store, Watertown, as a clerk for more than 15 years, retiring in 1983.
Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Auburn, daughter of Julian and Mary Wawro Kukiela, she attended school in Auburn. She married Edwin J. Williams of the town of Pinckney on Jan. 10, 1953, at St. Hyacinth's Catholic Church, Auburn, with the Rev. Edward Kurdzeil officiating.
The couple moved to Black River in 1958. Mr. Williams, a clerk and weigh master for General Crushed Stone in Watertown for 39 years, retired in 1991.
Mrs. Williams was a member of Antwerp American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1400 Auxiliary, Watertown, and an avid New York Yankees fan.
Surviving besides her husband are a son, Francis J., Black River; a daughter and her husband, Marsha W. and Stephen A. Hodkinson, Watertown; a brother and his wife, Leo and Helen Kukiela, Florida, a grandson and nieces and nephews.
A son, Paul E., died in 1979, and three brothers, Alex, Stanley and Albin Kukiela, and a sister, Frances Melnick, died before her.
A funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Mulvaney, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
