OGDENSBURG — Sarah M. Walker, 89, United Helpers Adult Home, died Wednesday at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.
Mrs. Walker served on the board of directors for United Helpers Management Co. from 1975 until four years ago, when she assumed emeritus status, and was the first woman to serve on the United Helpers Management Board's Finance Committee.
She donated generously to Canton College Foundation, establishing several scholarship funds in nursing and criminal justice for deserving north country students. To date, 40 of these scholarships have been awarded. She also was said to have made anonymous donations to students and community members who needed extra help.
Born June 8, 1919, at Rensselaer Falls, she was the ninth of 13 children of William Fulton Sr. and Anna Altmar McAllister. During World War II, she served in the Civil Air Patrol at Heuvelton.
She married Arlington Walker on Dec. 6, 1940, in Spring Valley. The couple resided at 37 Justina St., Heuvelton, for most of their married life. Mr. Walker was Oswegatchie town justice for 19 years, during which time Mrs. Walker volunteered to keep all of the files and records for Oswegatchie Town Court. He died April 13, 1981.
Mrs. Walker took care of her parents and her father-in-law in her home during their later years. She also was a horse lover and took care of various relatives' horses over the years, including her father-in-law's sulky racer, Trinka Dillon.
Surviving are a brother, Robert McAllister, Waddington, and many nieces and nephews and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Six brothers, John, Fulton "Buster," Richard, William, Edward and Lawrence McAllister, an infant brother, also named William McAllister, and four sisters, Ida M. Downing, Euretta "Dady" Young, Anne "Bunny" Davis and Nancy M. Hartwick, died before her.
The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be at a later date.
