Cameron J. Gauthier

CANTON — A funeral Mass for Cameron J. Gauthier, 84, Canton, will be said at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Timothy G. Canaan officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mr. Gauthier died Wednesday at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at O'Leary Funeral Home, where services will be conducted Saturday at 7 p.m. by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and at 8:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Gauthier worked for New York Telephone Co., Potsdam, for many years, beginning as an installer and repairman and later becoming a frame man, retiring in 1986 after 40 years' service.

Born March 8, 1924, in Montreal, Quebec, son of William and Laura Cameron Gauthier, he also was the stepson of Robert S. Wylie.

He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and Ogdensburg Free Academy before enlisting in the New York National Guard on Sept. 20, 1939. He served 11 months and 20 days before receiving a minority discharge. He also served 20 hours at Stanley Barracks, Toronto, Ontario, before being sent home.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army from 1943 to 1945 as a paratrooper with the 517th Parachute Infantry Combat Team, stationed in France, Italy, Germany and Belgium.

He married M. Phoebe Catanzarite on May 11, 1946, at St. Mary's Church, Massena.

Mr. Gauthier was a member of Lisbon American Legion, Canton VFW and Canton Sportmen's Club and was a very active member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Sarto Council 1059 and a Knights of Columbus district deputy. He enjoyed reading.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters and their husbands, Kathryn E. Gauthier and Robert Gordon, Ottawa, Ontario, Christine L. and Rick Mace, Canton, and Ellen M. Gauthier and Dr. Steven Miller, Lewisburg, Pa.; two sons and their wives, Edward C. and Jacqueline and Loren R. "Doc" and Beverly, all of Canton; a sister, Helen Weston, Saratoga, nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

A sister, Lauretta M. Tuthill, died before him.

In place of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, St. Mary's School, Canton, or Canton Free Library.
