CARTHAGE — The funeral for Harold R. "Sonny" Newton, 66, of 428 S. Mechanic St., will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home. Burial will be private.
Mr. Newton died Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse. He had been ill for a few days.
A calling hour will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Newton retired in 1996 from James River Corp. as a papermaker.
Born Dec. 9, 1941, at home in Carthage, son of Harold and Bertha Bishop Newton, he attended Augustinian Academy and Carthage High School. He served in the Navy from 1959 to 1962.
He married Marsha G. Olds on Aug. 3, 1963, at Woolworth Memorial Methodist Church, Great Bend.
Mr. Newton was a communicant of St. James Church and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and carpentry projects.
Besides his wife, Mr. Newton is survived by two daughters, Cindy Smith, Antwerp, and Tania Flint, Carthage; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harold Robert II, Bruce, Wis., and Alonzo C. and Rosa, Syracuse; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Donna Newton, address unknown, Linda Sanders, Carthage, Joan Newton and Mary and Thomas Hoffman, all of Florida, and Charlene and David Curtis, Ashford Hollow, and seven grandchildren.
