NORTH BANGOR — Thomas P. Monaghan, 81, Uno Street, died Sunday at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt., where he had been a patient since April 21.

Mr. Monaghan managed Malone Diner from 1947 to 1956 and from 1958 to 1971. In 1973, he began working as a laborer and bookkeeper for the Malone village Department of Public Works, retiring in 1988.

Born May 14, 1927, in Malone, son of Henry J. and Laura McGillic Monaghan, he graduated from North Country Community College, Saranac Lake.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of Notre Dame Holy Name Society. He was commissioned as a lay minister in 1988 and served at Upstate Correctional Facility, Franklin Correctional Facility and Bare Hill Correctional Facility, all in Malone. He also was a lector at church.

Mr. Monaghan joined the Knights of Columbus Malone Council 308 in 1954 and received first, second and third degrees. In 1961, he received the fourth degree from Our Lady of Victory General Assembly 29906. He was a former third-degree grand knight and district deputy. He served as leader of the Northern Conference and as faithful navigator of the fourth degree and also was a trustee. He also served on the state level as auxiliary chairman of the C and B program and other programs.

He was a volunteer at Malone Senior Citizens and North Star Industries. He was a past member of Malone Golf and Country Club, Malone Chess Club, Malone Bowling League and Moonshine Square Dancing Club.

Surviving are three nieces, a nephew and several cousins.

A sister, Ann E. Goodman, died Dec. 28, 2002.

The funeral Mass will be said at St. Joseph's Church at a date and time to be announced. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service.
