Lewis County boards ignore will of the people
FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2008

Even though the subject of the proposed limestone quarry adjacent to the village of Port Leyden has not been in the news lately, it doesn't mean that things are not happening. We are continuing to gather information about this quarry and others and have been seeking signatures opposing the quarry. To date, the majority of individuals in the area have signed opposing the quarry and have sent letters with their concerns to the Department of Environmental Conservation and government officials.

These signatures have been forwarded to the village of Port Leyden board and the Leyden town board. However, these boards have been reluctant to act in accordance with the will of the people. In fact, not only have we met with opposition from individuals on these boards but have also met with opposition at the county level.

After speaking with representatives opposing the proposed asphalt plant in Martinsburg and the proposed limestone quarry in Lowville, they, too, have had similar experiences with local and county officials. It seems no one in these offices wants to help their own people. They are either related to one another, friends or business partners or are concerned with tax dollars.

The Lewis County Legislature has board members who have relatives working for or are themselves working for these "mining" companies. They are members of the Lewis County Planning Board. Because of their positions, they are able to manipulate other agencies that could help us — one such agency is the Lewis County Mental Health. This agency is well aware of the numbers they service and the types of issues their clients have. They know that noise, vibrations, etc., would negatively impact these clients and affect their quality of life. The number of clients the agency services in this area is substantial. If you are a client, please let them know your quality of life will be harmed.

It is time that the people of Lewis County take their governments back. If you oppose the mining in Lowville, Martinsburg and/or Port Leyden, write or call your representatives and remind them who they represent. Send letters to the Department of Environmental Conservation and other state officials with your concerns. If you do not have the time or don't know what to say, please contact me for a form letter.

The more they hear from you the more apt they are to do the will of the people. Remind them that they are representatives of the people and are at the mercy of these people at election time.
