Sandy Creek rallies in 11th, keeps streak alive
BATTLING FOR VICTORY: Comets barely edge Raiders for 94th straight Frontier League triumph
WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2008

LOWVILLE — Sandy Creek plated six runs in the top of the 11th inning, keyed by Kaylee Fravel's two-run triple, and kept its Frontier League softball win streak intact with a 9-4 extra-innings decision over Lowville in Tuesday's crossover game.

The victory is the 94th consecutive league triumph for the Comets (15-1 overall, 12-0 league), whose previous Frontier League loss was to the Red Raiders on May 17, 2001.

This one wasn't easy, either.

The teams were tied 2-2 through the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings before Sandy Creek seized the lead with a run in the top of the 10th.

Chelsea Claflin's suicide squeeze bunt allowed Meghan Clark to score, but Lowville responded in the bottom of the inning when Jen Lee ran home from second on a Comets' throwing error.

Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek) and Jessica Becker (Lowville) each went the distance, finishing with an impressive 15 strikeouts apiece, and walking just one and two hitters, respectively.

"I can honestly say I've never been to the 11th inning before," Sandy Creek coach Bill Fowler said. "It was exciting. Both sides played very well and it was a battle."

Courtney Claflin and Mercedes LaVeck each executed successful suicide squeeze bunts in the 11th for Sandy Creek, which also got an RBI-double from Tayler Fravel and a run-scoring single from Rowell (3-for-4) in the inning.

Lowville (9-4, 7-4) scored once in the bottom of the 11th, but was retired in order after a base hit by Becker (3-for-5). Rebekah Jantzi added a pair of hits for Lowville.

Goodnough finished with two hits for South Jefferson (14-4 overall, 10-1 league). Shannon Zaykoski also added two hits.

Miranda Austin had two hits, including an RBI single in the top of the ninth for Beaver River (6-9, 4-9) a brief lead.
